The best coding monitor is the one that lets you keep context visible. Developers constantly switch between code, docs, terminals, logs, pull requests, dashboards, and design references. A cramped display turns that into tab juggling.
For most software work, a 27-inch QHD monitor is the safest first purchase. It gives enough room for an IDE and side panel without forcing awkward scaling. A 4K monitor can be excellent, but only if the operating system and apps handle scaling cleanly for your workflow.

Text clarity matters more than refresh rate
High refresh rates are nice, but code is mostly text. Look for sharp text rendering, stable brightness, good contrast, and a stand that reaches the right height. If a monitor causes neck angle problems, it is a bad monitor no matter how good the panel looks.
USB-C can simplify the desk
A USB-C monitor that charges the laptop and carries display signal can remove one dock from the setup. That is valuable for small offices and hot desks. Still, check power delivery. Some monitors provide enough power for light laptops but not for high-performance development machines.

Buy one strong main monitor before buying two mediocre ones. If you later add a second screen, use it for reference material, logs, preview windows, or communication tools. Keeping the editor centered on the best display reduces fatigue.
